About East Bali
East Bali is one of Bali's loveliest areas.
Rich with relics from its past as the site of Bali's most powerful kingdoms, East Bali is both fascinating and a relaxed, easy going place to spend some time.
The area is overshadowed by the sacred Mt Agung, a still active volcano which is the site of Indonesia's largest temple, Pura Besakih (the Mother Temple).
Padang Bai is a coastal port which serves as a base for the Lombok ferry. It is also a convenient base from which to explore eastern Bali.
Just a short drive east from Padang Bai is Candi Dasa, a lovely seaside village. Although geared towards tourism, Candi Dasa could best be described as 'low key', making it a relaxing place to visit and stay.
Some distance further along the coast is the village of Ahmed. Whilst fairly remote, Ahmed is a popular destination for dive enthusiasts, as well as for those who want to get away from it all.
Things to do
There are many attractions worth visiting in eastern Bali, such as the Water Palace near Amlapura, Goa Lawa (Bat Cave) and Tenganan, a Bali Aga (indigenous) village which predates Hindu culture.
Klungkung, the capital of the Klunkun district, is famous for its 'Kerta Gosa' court house. Its ceilings are decorated with fragile wayang paintings, illustrating the carriage of justice. Set among exquisite gardens and Bale Kampang (floating pavilions), this is definitely worth a visit.
